SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT NOT LIMITED TO CPAP; YOUR DENTIST MAY BE ABLE TO HELP

Sleep apnea treatment is often associated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, which require patients to wear masks linked to machines that provide a constant airflow as they sleep; unfortunately, many patients are unable to adjust to CPAP and halt treatment. There are alternatives to CPAP, however.

St. Joseph, Michigan, dentist Dr. Sven Erickson has had extensive success helping patients (and their sleeping partners) find relief from chronic snoring and other symptoms of sleep apnea with the use of custom dental appliances. To learn more about sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment, please call Modern Dentistry Associates at 269-264-4388.

Sleep apnea, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in particular, can have severe health impacts if not treated. OSA has been linked to a heightened risk for hypertension, heart attack, stroke and other complications.

While CPAP can be effective in treating sleep apnea, patients often find the masks uncomfortable and quit treatment before they receive any health benefits. Many patients who suffer from sleep apnea or recurring snoring benefit from the use of oral appliances.

These devices, which are sometimes referred to as nightguards, are custom made for your unique bite. These oral appliances fit comfortably in your mouth and allow you to maintain an open airway during sleep.

The best treatment option for you depends on a number of individual factors, including the severity of your sleep apnea and your overall health. Dr. Erickson will discuss your choices with you in detail following a thorough exam.

If you or a loved one snores regularly and experiences other sleep apnea symptoms such as excessive daytime fatigue and morning headaches, please contact Modern Dentistry Associates today. Dr. Erickson and our knowledgeable team welcome patients from the greater St. Joseph, Niles and Kalamazoo, Michigan, areas.
